Play8oy: game IDs, the SCORE bar and twenty slots worth a look

Open five Play8oy slots in a row and the bottom of the screen barely changes: LINES, PLAY with a minus and plus, TOTAL PLAY, WIN, and a green SPIN button that says HOLD FOR AUTOSPIN underneath. Getting in, topping up, getting out

Play8oy isn't something you sign up for on a website. In Malaysia you get a game ID and password from an agent (or a provider who works like one), then log in through the app. You install it yourself, outside Google Play and the App Store, which brings its own steps and risks on Android and iPhone; those are covered in the Play8oy install notes.

Money goes through the same person who gave you the ID. You top up by bank transfer (or whatever the agent accepts), they load credit onto your ID, and when you want to withdraw, the "cuci", you ask them and they pay you out. So the agent is the part that can go wrong. Before you top up anything, ask how long a cuci takes and what the minimum is, and start small until one has actually landed in your account.

The screen inside every slot

Top left is a gold coin icon and your balance, labelled SCORE. It's shown in points, not ringgit. The lobby capture on the install notes page shows a wallet in MYR, so the conversion is something to confirm with whoever issues your ID.

Top right are three blue buttons: i for the paytable, a gear for settings and a house to go back to the lobby. Most slots also carry four jackpot boxes in the middle of the top bar, GRAND, MAJOR, MINOR and MINI, ticking up between spins. A few older games (Aladdin, Dolphin, Fong Shen, God of Wealth, Monkey King) don't have them.

At the bottom, TOTAL PLAY is the number to watch. It's LINES times PLAY: 9 lines at PLAY 10 is 90 a spin, 50 lines at PLAY 2 is 100.

Some paytables add a jackpot share table that ties your cut of the jackpot to your bet. On African Wildlife and Pirate a bet of 50 gets 50% and 100 gets 100%. Laura has its own single JACKPOT counter, won with five JP-tagged symbols on a line, and asks for 75 or 150. Read that table before you let it talk you into a bigger stake.

A tour of the slots

Most Play8oy games are 5 reels by 3 rows on 9, 15, 20, 25 or 50 lines. The interesting ones are the exceptions.

Amazon Jungle has no reels at all: seven round animal tiles in a honeycomb on a temple wall, 9 lines that bend between them, and a bonus where you push through temple rooms until you hit a skull.

Fire Spin is a 3x3 fruit machine with sevens, bars and cherries, lines running down the columns as well as across, an any-position pay table and a DOUBLE button instead of LINES.

Fortune Tree and Golden Rooster replace LINES with a GOLD SYMBOL setting on a 243-ways grid. Each animal or treasure comes in a gold and a plain version, and the gold one pays several times as much. For wild rules worth learning, God of Wealth has two kinds of Fa wild that unfold into whole reels, pays both ways, and gives 10, 20 or 50 free spins for lion dance scatters. God of Wealth 2 keeps the paytable and adds the jackpot boxes. Grand Blue has a killer whale wild that doubles every win it's in, with pearl clam scatters for up to 33 free spins.

Beyond those there are character slots: Aladdin with an expanding free-game symbol, Alice with an All-of-a-kind row, Fong Shen and Monkey King with All Same prizes, Captain Roger and Hercules on plain line pays, Highroad King with its trucks, and Fortune Panda on an unusual four-row grid. A word on names

Several Play8oy titles borrow from famous slots elsewhere: Grand Blue looks a lot like Great Blue, Highroad King calls itself Highroad Kings JP, and Laura has a heroine who'll remind you of a certain tomb raider. The Play8oy versions have their own paytables and features. A review of "the original" may not match what's on your phone, and the i screen is the one to trust.
