The row of numbered beads down each side of the Aladdin reels runs 20, 18, 12, 4, 2 and so on, out of order, which is the only hint that there are 20 lines here and not the 9 you get on a lot of older Play8oy games. The reels sit in a dark red palace arch with torches burning on either side.

Most of what lands is letters: 10, J, Q, K and A drawn in a curly Arabic-looking script, each in its own colour. The picture symbols are a curved sword, a flying carpet, a scowling thief with a red headscarf and a gap in his teeth, and Aladdin himself in a white turban. The lamp sits on a purple tile of its own.

The bet in all three shots is LINES 20 and PLAY 1, so 20 points a spin. In the capture above two lamps and two thieves are on screen, line 12 is lit, and WIN reads 62.

The lamp and the free game

The paytable is a single page, with the payouts down both sides and the rules in the middle.

The lamp substitutes for all symbols, and three or more of them trigger the free games. It also pays by itself: 100 for five, 40 for four, 2 for three.

The free game is where this slot gets its character. When it starts, one symbol is picked at random to be the special expanding symbol (the paytable picture shows the 10). During the free games that symbol expands to cover three positions on its reel and pays in any position on the lines played. If you've played the classic book-style slots you'll know the idea.

Aladdin tops the line pays at 1,000 for five, then the thief at 600, carpet at 400 and sword at 200. Those four pay for two of a kind as well. The letters run from 150 for five A's down to 25 for five 10s.
