Fortune Tree: gold and plain animals, and a GOLD SYMBOL bet

Where the LINES box usually sits, Fortune Tree has one that says GOLD SYMBOL, set to 128 in the first capture and 48 in the others. With PLAY at 1, TOTAL PLAY simply follows it: 128, then 48. It's the only thing on the bar that works differently from the regular Play8oy slots, and it ties in with the reels.
Every animal comes in two versions. There's a gold dragon and a plain green one, a gold phoenix and a coloured one, a gold tiger and a striped one, a gold horse and a brown one. There's a gold monkey too, and card symbols A, K, Q, J and a red 8. Red lanterns hang on both sides, and ALL WAYS is written down the edges of the frame.
Above the reels are four prize counters named after the animals: DRAGON 101,977, PHOENIX 29,153, TIGER 9,270 and HORSE 5,281. The usual GRAND, MAJOR, MINOR and MINI boxes are there as well, though in two of the captures they read 0.
In this spin gold monkeys land on reels 1, 2 and 3, five of them in all, and pay 40. A red banner says "Good luck goes on", which I couldn't match to a rule.
Gold pays more
The rules page makes the gold point very clearly. A gold dragon pays 300 for five, 180 for four and 150 for three; the plain dragon only 30, 15 and 10. The gold phoenix pays 180, the gold tiger 125 and the gold horse 100, while every plain animal is stuck at 30 for five. The gold monkey pays 88, the letters 15 and the 8 just 8.
At the bottom, a green medallion appears with "3 or more consecutive ... from left" and "Total Bet X 50", which looks like a scatter prize. The capture cuts off there.

What does GOLD SYMBOL mean on Fortune Tree?
It's the first box on the bet bar, where LINES would normally be. At 128 with PLAY 1 the total is 128; at 48 the total is 48. The paytable pays gold versions of the animals much more than plain ones, so the setting seems to decide how many gold symbols are active, but the screen doesn't spell that out.
How does 243 ways work here?
The rules page says wins are paid left to right for matching symbols on adjacent reels in any position, with a small diagram showing a valid and an invalid pattern.
